Practise →JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is India's national engineering entrance exam. JEE Main, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is the gateway to the NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes, and also serves as the qualifier for JEE Advanced — the exam for admission to the IITs.
JEE Main is held online (computer-based) in two sessions each year, and the better of the two scores is considered. Questions test Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the Class 11 and 12 syllabus, with a strong emphasis on conceptual application and problem-solving speed.
| Conducting body | National Testing Agency (NTA) |
| Mode | Online — computer-based test (CBT) |
| Sessions | Two per year; best score is used |
| Questions (Paper 1, B.E./B.Tech) | 75 to be answered — 25 each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (20 MCQ + 5 numerical per subject) |
| Total marks | 300 |
| Marking scheme | +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer |
| Duration | 3 hours |
| Subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics |
- Physics — Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics and Semiconductors
- Chemistry — Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry
- Mathematics — Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Vectors & 3D Geometry, and Probability
- Based on the NCERT Class 11 & 12 syllabus, applied at a higher problem-solving level
- Build concepts first, then drill with timed practice — JEE rewards speed and accuracy under pressure.
- Master the numerical-answer questions; they carry full marks and reward careful calculation.
- Solve previous years' papers to internalise the question patterns and difficulty distribution.
- Maintain a formula and error notebook for quick revision in the final weeks.
What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main is the first stage, used for admission to NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. The top performers in JEE Main qualify to write JEE Advanced, which is used only for admission to the IITs.
How many times can I attempt JEE Main?
JEE Main is held in two sessions every year, and you may appear in both. The better of your two scores is used for ranking.
What subjects are tested in JEE?
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with equal weight across the three subjects.
Is there negative marking in JEE Main?
Yes. You score +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer, in both the MCQ and numerical sections.
Are these JEE practice questions free?
Yes. All topic-wise JEE practice on Safe Learning for Kids is free, with worked explanations.
