Synonyms

Choosing the word closest in meaning to a given word

Explanation

What are Synonyms?

A synonym is a word that means the same (or nearly the same) as another word.

Example: Happy and joyful are synonyms — they both describe a good feeling.

On the Primary ISEE, you are shown one word and must pick the answer choice that is closest in meaning.

Example question:
GLAD
(A) sad   (B) fast   (C) happy   (D) tall
→ Answer: (C) happy

  • Watch out for traps. Some choices sound similar but mean something different (e.g., bare vs bear).
  • Use the word in a sentence to check if your chosen answer makes sense.
