Synonyms

What are Synonyms?
A synonym is a word that means the same (or nearly the same) as another word.

On the Primary ISEE, you are shown one word and must pick the answer choice that is closest in meaning.
Example question:
GLAD
(A) sad (B) fast (C) happy (D) tall
→ Answer: (C) happy

Test Strategy
- Cover the choices first. Think of your own synonym, then look for it in the options.
- Eliminate wrong answers. Cross out choices that mean the opposite or something unrelated.
- Watch out for traps. Some choices sound similar but mean something different (e.g., bare vs bear).
- Use the word in a sentence to check if your chosen answer makes sense.
