Sentence Completion
Choosing the best word to complete a sentence
Explanation
What is Sentence Completion?
You are given a sentence with a blank and must choose the word that fits best.
Example:
The puppy was very ______ and licked everyone's face.
(A) angry (B) friendly (C) sleepy (D) heavy
→ Answer: (B) friendly — the clue is "licked everyone's face" (a friendly action).
Using Context Clues
The rest of the sentence gives you clues about what word belongs in the blank.
- Definition clues: The sentence explains the blank. "The enormous, or very ______, elephant blocked the path." → big
- Example clues: Examples tell you the category. "She brought snacks such as apples and crackers to ______ her hunger." → satisfy
- Contrast clues: Words like but, however, although signal an opposite. "He was tired but still ______ after the long walk." → energetic/cheerful
Tips & Traps
- Read the whole sentence before looking at the choices.
- Fill in your own word first, then find the closest match.
- Watch for contrast words (but, however, although, yet) — they flip the meaning.
- Eliminate choices that make the sentence nonsensical.
