Number Operations
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division basics
Explanation
The Four Operations
| Operation | Key Words | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Addition (+) | sum, total, in all, altogether, more than | 12 + 8 = 20 |
| Subtraction (−) | difference, less, fewer, remain, left | 20 − 8 = 12 |
| Multiplication (×) | product, times, each, groups of | 4 × 6 = 24 |
| Division (÷) | quotient, share equally, split, per | 24 ÷ 4 = 6 |
Word Problem Strategy
- Read the problem carefully.
- Identify what you are asked to find.
- Look for key words (see table above).
- Write a number sentence and solve.
- Check that your answer makes sense.
Example: Maya had 15 stickers. She gave 6 to her friend. How many does she have left?
Key word: left → subtraction → 15 − 6 = 9
Key Tips
- Memorise multiplication tables up to 12×12.
- Double-check by using the inverse operation (e.g., check 18 ÷ 3 = 6 by doing 6 × 3 = 18).
- For multi-step problems, solve one step at a time and write down each answer.
