Number Operations

Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division basics

Explanation

The Four Operations

OperationKey WordsExample
Addition (+)sum, total, in all, altogether, more than12 + 8 = 20
Subtraction (−)difference, less, fewer, remain, left20 − 8 = 12
Multiplication (×)product, times, each, groups of4 × 6 = 24
Division (÷)quotient, share equally, split, per24 ÷ 4 = 6

Word Problem Strategy

  1. Read the problem carefully.
  2. Identify what you are asked to find.
  3. Look for key words (see table above).
  4. Write a number sentence and solve.
  5. Check that your answer makes sense.

Example: Maya had 15 stickers. She gave 6 to her friend. How many does she have left?
Key word: left → subtraction → 15 − 6 = 9

Key Tips

  • Memorise multiplication tables up to 12×12.
  • Double-check by using the inverse operation (e.g., check 18 ÷ 3 = 6 by doing 6 × 3 = 18).
  • For multi-step problems, solve one step at a time and write down each answer.
