Practise →The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) is a school-level mathematics competition conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) for students in Classes 1 to 12. It assesses mathematical reasoning, logical thinking and the ability to apply mathematics to everyday situations.
The olympiad is held in two levels: Level 1 is a school-based written test, and Level 2 (for Classes 3 to 12) is for the top performers from Level 1. Regular topic-wise practice with progressively harder questions is the best way to prepare for the olympiad's higher-order thinking questions.
| Conducting body | Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) |
| Eligibility | Classes 1 to 12 |
| Sections | Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics, Achievers Section |
| Questions (Classes 1–4) | 35 questions for 35 marks |
| Questions (Classes 5–12) | 50 questions for 60 marks |
| Duration | 60 minutes |
| Levels | Level 1 (school-based); Level 2 for Classes 3–12 top scorers |
- Logical Reasoning — patterns, series, analogies, coding-decoding and spatial reasoning
- Mathematical Reasoning — the core class-level mathematics syllabus (numbers, arithmetic, geometry, algebra as per class)
- Everyday Mathematics — applying mathematical concepts to real-life word problems
- Achievers Section — higher-order, higher-mark questions that decide top ranks
- Practise the Achievers Section carefully — these questions carry more marks and separate the top ranks.
- Build a strong foundation in mental maths and logical-reasoning patterns, not just the textbook syllabus.
- Attempt questions slightly above your class level to stretch problem-solving ability.
- Time your practice — the olympiad is fast-paced at one minute or so per question.
Who can take the SOF IMO?
Students from Class 1 to Class 12 can participate. The exam is set separately for each class level.
How many questions are in the IMO?
Classes 1–4 answer 35 questions (35 marks), while Classes 5–12 answer 50 questions (60 marks), across four sections.
What is the Achievers Section?
It is the final section of higher-order-thinking questions that carry more marks per question and play a big role in deciding the top ranks.
How long is the IMO exam?
The exam duration is 60 minutes.
Are these IMO practice questions free?
Yes. All class-wise IMO practice on Safe Learning for Kids is free, with explanations.
